John E. King is a partner in Tilleke & Gibbins. He heads the firm’s Cambodia practice, overseeing operations, managing client relationships, and leading an active intellectual property group in Phnom Penh. He is supported by a strong team of local Khmer advisors and the international expertise of our offices across Southeast Asia to provide advice that is tailored to the franchising, life sciences, and technology sectors. John previously led the firm’s Dispute Resolution Department for several years, and he played a central role in building Tilleke & Gibbins’ Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City offices, where he served as managing director from 2007 to 2010.

John is a U.S.-licensed attorney. He has experience representing clients in a full range of commercial disputes encompassing both litigation and arbitration matters, and specializes in international contracts, financial transactions, insurance claims, securities law, bankruptcy and restructuring, logistics, construction and real estate, and white-collar crime.

John is a founding member of the Thailand branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He earned his Juris Doctor (J.D.) with high distinction (magna cum laude and Order of the Coif) from the University of Minnesota, and he practiced banking and finance law at Leonard, Street & Deinard, a leading U.S. law firm, prior to joining Tilleke & Gibbins.

  • Represented the supplier of an aviation system against a state enterprise in pre-litigation negotiations pertaining to the breach of a supply contract.

  • Represented a Hong Kong construction conglomerate in a contentious business deal with its Thai joint venture partner, which led to civil lawsuits, cross-border arbitration, and a government investigation into the acts of the JV partner and a related state enterprise.

  • Protected our client’s reputation by preparing a claim against an opposing party for defamation and negotiating a successful settlement of the dispute.

  • Collected electronic evidence of defamatory statements against our client’s business. We filed a civil claim against the opposing party and reached a successful out-of-court settlement.

  • Represented a client in a bankruptcy case. Our representation included providing legal advice, preparing and submitting a petition for an absolute receivership order and the debt repayment application, attending various meetings with the official receiver, and attending court hearings.

  • Prosecuted and defended various complex civil and criminal actions related to breach of contract, wrongful acts, undue enrichment, fraud, and attempted fraud on behalf of our client.

  • Defended clients against criminal charges related to work permit issues, including providing legal advice, assisting clients at inquiry meetings with police officials, attending court hearings, and assisting with the immigration process.

  • Represented a multinational resin manufacturer in civil litigation against its joint venture partner who violated a noncompete agreement by operating a resin business that is in direct competition with the joint venture. The total claim for damages is approximately USD 41 million with a motion to eject the defendant from the joint venture.

  • Represented a multinational software design company on four civil and criminal cases against a former director claiming roughly USD 1 million in damages, alleging that the company falsified the incumbent’s resignation. One case has been ruled in favor of the client and three are pending trial. The dispute began when our client received an arbitral award by a Singaporean court against the former director valued at USD 1.3 million for being in violation of his noncompete agreement.

  • Represented a global manufacturer of in-store refrigerators and cooling devices in an arbitration case against its former distributor claiming USD 25 million in damages on the basis of a failed joint venture arrangement it had been negotiating for eight years. The plaintiff’s claim includes lost profits extending ten years into the future as well as damages relating to the eight years of negotiations.

  • Acted on behalf of a consortium of U.K. reinsurers that provided USD 70 million in political risk insurance to a prominent retail shopping center in Thailand. The plaintiff is claiming payment in damages resulting from an arson attack it suffered during the May 2010 political crisis. The key issue in this case revolves around cause of peril.

  • Advised a multinational insurer on coverage issues in a USD 92 million claim resulting from environmental disasters in Thailand in 2011.
