Biography

Son Thai Hoang is a licensed lawyer and a senior associate in Tilleke & Gibbins’ Hanoi office, where he handles a wide range of matters related to establishing and protecting trademarks and copyrights in Vietnam. He also assists clients with IP commercialization, including drafting, reviewing, and localizing IP-related agreements. With more than 18 years of experience in handling IP rights conflicts and commercializing IP rights, Son has successfully helped numerous clients protect and commercialize their IP rights, and overcome complex office actions issued by the Intellectual Property Office of Vietnam.

Recognized as a leading trademark practitioner in Vietnam by the WTR 1000, Son is an enthusiastic advocate for IP rights in Vietnam and regularly works with government agencies and universities to raise awareness of IP issues. He also serves as an instructor for INTA’s International Certificate Course.

Before joining Tilleke & Gibbins, Son worked at a top local IP firm as the head of the appeal department, and has gained considerable knowledge and practical experience in the protection of intellectual property rights with an emphasis on oppositions, appeals, and cancellations.


Experience
  • Assisted with dozens of successful franchising and licensing projects in Vietnam in a wide variety of industry sectors, including retail, food and beverages, fashion, toys, car rental, real estate, and education.
  • Represented and advised U.S.-based multinational pharmaceutical companies to successfully overcome various descriptive refusals and win opposition cases.
  • Acted for world-leading Japanese automobile companies in various cases of trademarks conflicting with others’ protected works of applied art and/or industrial designs.
  • Helped an association in Germany to prevent its trademark from being hijacked by another association in Vietnam that had already obtained a consent letter from the German Embassy in Vietnam for both registration and use of such trademark in Vietnam.
  • Advised a Singaporean coffee-manufacturing company in a trademark dispute with a world-leading fast-food company.
