Nu Thi To Nguyen is an associate with the Tilleke & Gibbins corporate and commercial team in Hanoi. With a comprehensive academic background in both international and domestic law and 15 years of work experience in various legal positions, To Nu has excelled in assisting foreign clients in a range of legal areas including franchising, construction, tech/media/telecom, foreign trade, insurance, education, and banking and finance, with a focus on contract-related and dispute resolution matters.
To Nu is fluent in English and Chinese, and previously served as a legal officer with the Hanoi branch of a large Chinese bank, where she advised on legal regulations and compliance, reviewed contracts, and assisted with the bank’s anti-money laundering efforts.
To Nu graduated as salutatorian from both the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam and Hanoi Law University. She is a member of the Hanoi Bar Association and the Vietnam Bar Federation.
- Assisted a Vietnamese company in negotiating a settlement with a foreign invested company for a dispute regarding the termination of a construction contract with a disputed amount of USD 8 million.
- Advised a Hong Kong manufacturer of elevators and escalators in a potential dispute with a Vietnamese bank arising from a construction contract with the approximate total value of USD 35 million.
- Assisted a Chinese company in a USD 10 million contract dispute before the Vietnam International Arbitration Centre (VIAC) with regard to the implementation of a hydropower project.
- Assisted a global construction design firm in successfully obtaining a construction operation license in Vietnam.
- Assisted a Malaysian company in the oil and gas sector in an arbitration case before VIAC in Ho Chi Minh City related to performance of contract in a well plugging and abandonment project.
- Assisted the subsidiary of a global leader in insurance brokering and risk management in Vietnam with contract review and advice on their daily operations.
- Advised many global brands on legal issues of franchising activities in Vietnam and assisted with franchise registration and annual updates.
- Advised the Hong Kong subsidiary of one of the world’s largest insurance companies and a leading group of insurance service providers with regulations on cross-border supply of insurance services in Vietnam.
- Assisted a Malaysian manufacturer to defend its legitimate rights and interests in an anti-dumping case before the Trade Remedies Authority of Vietnam.
- Advised many global and regional e-commerce companies on Vietnamese laws and regulations related to data protection, direct marketing, and e-commerce platforms, and assisted with related legal matters such as reviewing privacy policies.
- Advised several foreign educational institutions on Vietnamese laws and regulations, including issues related to setting up international schools in Vietnam and providing online education services to Vietnamese students.
