Textile Presentation on Indigo

Dr. Linda S. McIntosh, Consulting Curator of the Tilleke & Gibbins Textile Collection, will present a program devoted to the topic of indigo on October 13, 2011. Natural indigo has historically been an important trade item, and its use has been documented throughout the world. The word indigo is derived from the Greek word indikon and Roman word indicum, referring to India, thought to the oldest center of indigo production. A short presentation on indigo dyeing in Laos will complement the viewing of Indigo: A World of Blue, a 60-minute documentary by Maiwa Production. Examples of indigo-dyed textiles from the Tilleke & Gibbins Collection will be on display.

The event will be held on October 13 at 10:30 am, and it is open to the public. For more information, please contact Linda at [email protected].
