Asia IP: Darani Vachanavuttivong Comments on Trademark Registration in Laos

Asia IP

In its cover story on “Asia Steps Up in Trademark Enforcement,” Hong Kong-based intellectual property magazine Asia IP  interviewed Darani Vachanavuttivong, co-managing partner and managing director of the intellectual property department at Tilleke & Gibbins, for her views on trademark registration in Laos.

Commenting on the length of time currently required to obtain a trademark registration, Darani said that it now takes more than 18 months for a first office action to be issued. Prior to 2012, it took less than 12 months to obtain a registration. “A trademark owner will encounter a further challenge if his or her mark is rejected for registration, and then the owner files an appeal against the rejection,” she continued.
